Educating yourself on all things - Visanne

What is Visanne?

Visanne (dienogest) is a progestin only medication specifically designed to treat Endometriosis. It works to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with Endometriosis by targeting the hormonal activity that fuels the growth of endometrial-like tissue.

How does Visanne work?

  • Suppressing estrogen production: Endometriosis lesions grow under the influence of estrogen. Visanne reduces estrogen levels in the body by suppressing ovulation and hormonal activity, slowing down or stopping the growth of the lesions.
  • Thinning the endometrium: It reduces the thickness of the uterine lining, which helps to minimize pain and bleeding.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Visanne decreases inflammation in the affected areas, alleviating chronic pain over time.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

Some people notice relief from symptoms within the first few weeks of starting Visanne, while others may take 2-3 months to experience significant improvement. It’s typically used as a long term treatment but should be monitored regularly by your doctor to ensure it's working effectively and safely.

Why is it recommended for people with Endometriosis?

  • Reduces pain: Studies have shown that it can alleviates common symptoms such as pelvic pain, painful periods and pain during sex.
  • Inhibits lesion growth: By reducing estrogen levels, it helps control the spread of the tissue.
  • Improves quality of life: Many individuals experience less pain and a greater ability to manage daily activities with Visanne.

Unlike some other treatments, Visanne does not induce menopause-like symptoms as strongly as medications like GnRH agonists.

Although it is recommended medication to try during your health journey, it is important to know it has no guarantee to stop the growth of Endometriosis or relieve symptoms.

While many people tolerate Visanne well, it can have side effects, as with any medication. Common and less common side effects may include:
